Virginia Tattoo day 5 - 20th Apr 2018

Virginia Tattoo day 5 Today we said haere ra to New York and headed off first thing on the bus down to Washington DC. Some of the younger girls got a wee fright with how quickly their bags had become so heavy! Shout out to Phil and Jonny for being champs and tossing them on and off for us!
After a busy few days the team dropped like flies and many naps were had. After a a quick refuel instead of resting as instructed the team were lead astray by the seniors in a very noisy game of Heads Up. The Leadership Team also took the time to rally up team points from our NY stint (points are given/deducted for things that are said or done on the trip)
Team Angus -21.3
Team Chantelle -28.5
Team Harriet -30.3
Team Lewis -37
Team Leighton +10.5
Robyn and Julie + parents -56
On arrival to Washington we picked up Terry our awesome tour guide who showed us to the numerous historical sites that Washington has to offer. First up was Arlington Cemetery where we saw a change of the guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier as well as the Kennedy family's final resting place. From here we then went through the historical main strip -the National Mall. A highlight of the afternoon was performing a fling in front of the White House -where we later learnt President Trump was inside at the time.
After many selfies and group pics we called it a day and had a pizza night in our hotel dining room -it's safe to say some of us are feeling the need to get dancing again after all of the American food!
An early night for us dancers as we prepare for another day of sightseeing and travelling down to Virginia Beach

Virginia tattoo day 4 - 19th Apr 2018

Virginia tattoo day 4 We started off our final day in New York bright and early to see the Charging Bull on Wall Street and then head across to Liberty Island. It was a chilly ferry ride but worth it to see the Statue of Liberty up close. We then carried on the ferry ride to Ellis Island, the most heavily trafficked immigration point in America through the early 20th century. After taking the ferry back to Manhattan the team split up to enjoy several different options exploring New York. This included the Brooklyn Bridge, the Natural History Museum, the United Nations, Grand Central Terminal and of course some time for shopping.

In the evening the team joined back up to do The Ride, a bus tour around Central Manhattan featuring actors dancing and singing for us on the streets. We then turned from audience to entertainers as we took the opportunity to do a flash mob dance outside Winter Garden Theatre. The cars that stopped in the street to watch certainly suggests the New York crowd loved it! Finally, we put the audience hats back on to enjoy dinner at Stardust, featuring live entertainment from up and coming Broadway stars (although we didn’t hesitate to join in with most songs).

An absolutely jam-packed day has left us all happy and exhausted. We’ll miss New York but are excited for what the rest of our travels hold!

Virginia Tattoo day 1 & 2 - 17th Apr 2018

Virginia Tattoo day 1 & 2 The team gathered at Auckland Airport on Sunday morning 15th April, ready and waiting for the adventure to begin. That was halted with delays in both Auckland AND Houston, but nevertheless we finally saw the bright lights of New York City out of our small plane windows!
Everything was a breeze, and before we knew it we were stepping out into the cold New York Spring air at midnight on Sunday night. A short bus ride to our hotel even meant we got a quick glance of the Empire State Building!!
After a good, but short night’s sleep, many of the team were awoken by flash flood warnings in the area of our hotel – not the best day to plan a rehearsal in a park!
Although Mother Nature wasn’t on our side, we were given some free time to head to Macy’s, see the Flatiron building or simply stroll through the bustling New York streets and alleyways.
At lunchtime, the team met for our first afternoon of touring – with the 9/11 Memorial and Museum at the World Trade Center first up on the list. It was a touching experience for everyone, and incredible that we had the opportunity to reflect on this major world event.
After a slight change of plans, we had a quick bite to eat downtown, then boarded the bus to make the trip out to Yankee Stadium in Queens to watch a home game by the New York Yankees (who gained a lot of new fans in, and sold a lot of merchandise to, the Dance Company).
We then discovered there is more than meets the eye to New York, and headed underground for our first Subway trip back to the one and only Times Square for a quick lookaround. After soaking in the sights, the team headed back to our hotel to have a full night’s rest before another day of touring and our first day rehearsing.
We feel so privileged and it is hard to believe we have been to some of the most iconic places on earth today, but we can’t wait to see where our next days in New York take us!
