Report from Hawkes Bay Summer School January 2008
Hawkes Bay Teachers & Judges held their 5th Summer School at Hastings
on 31st January - 2nd February 2008.
Our tutors this year Mrs Janet Allison - Lower Hutt, and Mrs Julie
Hawke- Christchurch., shared their wealth of knowledge and experience
with the hard working dancers . The enthusiastic tutors were treated
to some excellent dancing from all dancers.
Although numbers were down slightly on last year the dancers that
attended were lucky to be a part of smaller classes . We did not
have exam classes this year but dancers could participate in a highland,
step and reel class and we have had some very positive feedback
from those attending. Each class presented a dance at a concert
on the final day and this was enjoyed by all
The tutors then presented HB T & J scholarships to the following
:
- 18 & Over Jayden Withington Hastings
- Class 1 Cheri Cadman Normanby
- Class 2 Aine Blackman Tauranga
- Class 3 Hannah McRae Hastings
Comments from a few dancers on the last day. They were all asked
"How did you feel about Summer School this year? "
- Sarah & Jayden (18 & Over ) : It was worthwhile and beneficial
having an 18 & Over Class as you can specifically concentrate
on 18 & Over movements and competition preparation.
- Nicole (10) : I liked catching up with my friends that I only
see at competitions and I learnt lots.
- Dayna (10) : I enjoyed learning new things and the tutors were
nice.
HB T & J are holding an Exam School on 19th and 20th April 2008
at Havelock North. Tutor : Mrs Jacqueline Jones, Christchurch. Any
enquiries to either Jill McIntosh or Gaye Reid.

Report from Christchurch Summer School January 2008
2008 has been a very successful and happy Summer School attracting
124 participants. This figure includes both students and Teacher
Observers and is almost double the number of participants we had
last year.
Due to St Andrews College alterations we were forced to find a
new venue this year. Rangi Ruru Girls School proved to be a wonderful
venue with a large hall, gym and dance room. A well situated common
room/cafeteria was a great meeting place for parents and students
alike and once again the swimming pool was popular with students.
This year we held a very successful "takeaways" by the pool evening
which was enjoyed by many families.
This year our Tutors were Mrs Sherilyn Hall, Mrs Robyn Simmons,
Mrs Jacqueline Jones. Due to injury Ms Jan McKerrow had to pull
out. Fortunately for us Mrs Lynette Mitchell was attending Summer
School and agreed to take 3 classes, Mrs Julie Hawke took 1 class
and Mrs Jones filled in for the last class.
We had a new logo and name designed this year "Summer Fling" and
have successfully sold shorts, singlet tops, caps, bags and drink
bottles.
This year the local Radio station arrived and handed out free ice
creams to all students not in class after a number of students spoke
on the radio. We also had a write up in the local newspaper with
some great action shots of the dancers.
Dance and Step Dance Classes still continue to be popular, with
numbers in Grade classes being on the increase from previous years.
Both the junior and senior Choreography classes were well supported
and enjoyed by all. Once again we held a Boys only class which attracted
6 boys. All seemed to enjoy this class even though there was the
large range of ages.
Ten $50.00 scholarships were awarded this year by the Tutors of
each examination class from Initial thru to Advanced. We also requested
from the tutors runner-up winners in the event that the winner cannot
attend next years Summer School.
The following students were awarded scholarships at our demonstration
concert
- Initial Sian Sunckell (Leeston)
- Preparatory Samara Lloyd (Blenheim)
- Grade 1 Hannah Potter (Oamaru)
- Grade 2 Brittany Findlay (Christchurch)
- Grade 3 Sarah McQueen (Auckland)
- Grade 4 Serena Sangster (Dunedin)
- Grade 5 Kate Hunt (Blenheim)
- Elementary Hannah Cocker (Blenheim)
- Intermediate Rebecca Hunt (Blenheim)
- Advanced Nicole Preston (Winton)
A new scholarship was donated this year by Mrs Gail Dodson to an
Advanced Performers student to attend three classes at the 2009
Summer School. This was awarded to Hollie Diack of Christchurch

Report from Hawkes Bay Summer School January 2007
The Hawkes Bay Summer School was held in Hastings from 28-30th
January 2007. There were 35 dancers this year and as well as the
local dancers, dancers travelled from Gisborne, Tauranga, Auckland,
Palmerston North, Levin and Paraparaumu.
The tutors were Mrs Pamela Fleming, Auckland and Mrs Lynette Mitchell
, Mosgiel. The dancers enjoyed their hard working, energetic tutors
and the tutors were in turn treated to some excellent dancing from
enthusiastic, happy dancers.
Hastings turned on its best summer days, and a swim was the only
way to cool off. Two Sunday night classes on Core Body Strength
with a physiotherapist from Focus Health was a huge success, particularly
for the Senior Dancers who gained a lot from their class.
Scholarship Winners were:
- Nicole Harvey - Takapau
- Emma Stent - Havelock North
- Isla Maples - Auckland
- Ariana Ballantyne - Gisborne
- Ruby MacLaren - Tauranga

fresh food!!!
The concert was again a highlight on the final night with everyone

The following is a report and list of photos from the 2006 Christchurch
Summer School.
Christchurch Balmoral Summer School was recently held from 19 January
to 23 January at St Andrews College. We had three well received
Tutors Mrs Adele Swanson, Mrs Lynette Mitchell and Mrs Kylie Allison-Miller
and three wonderful pianists Miss Allison Holden, Mr Bill Grubb
and Mrs Irene Grey.
Once again we had a great weather (fortunately not as warm as last
year) with the swimming pool being almost as popular as the actual
dance classes!! The cafeteria was a great meeting place with not
only great food but a wonderful warm friendly atmosphere.
Registrations were slightly up on last year with 77 enrolled students
and 10 enrolled Teacher Observers. Enrolments came from as far south
as Invercargill and as far north as Tauranga making it a great place
to catch up with old friends and make many new friends in a non
competitive environment. ( As a matter of interest 26 private teachers
sent students to Summer School this year).
This
year for the first time a 'Boys Only' classes was trialled with
the tutor being Mr Brian North. This class was well received by
all but especially appreciated and enjoyed by the 6 boys who participated
in it ranging in age from 6yrs to 15yrs and will definitely be on
the time table again next year.
During the lunch hour 16 students enjoyed a fun class taken by
Highland Dancer and NZ aerobics instructor Miss Nuria Novoa. This
was lots of fun and included a fitness programme, aerobics, hip
hop and some Highland Dancing movements added in!
Summer
School concluded on Monday evening with a concert with items from
all dance and step dance classes, three examination grade Sword
Dance Sections, the Boys class and the Lunch time fun class.
Scholarships
were once again kindly donated by the NZAHND and were awarded to
students from each examination classes. The winners each received
$50.00 towards the Balmoral 2007 Summer School. The winners were:
- Initial Shnece Duncan (Lumsden)
- Preparatory Courtney Ridden (Leeston)
- Grade One Bridget Karton (Tauranga)
- Grade Two Jasmine Davern (Ashburton)
- Grade Three Leighton Terry (Gore)
- Grade Four Jemma Turner (Clarkville)
- Grade Five Rebecca Hunt (Blenheim)
- Elementary Serena Jensen (Christchurch)
- Intermediate Jessica Findlay (Christchurch)
- Advanced Sharon Hostick (Christchurch)
A big thank you to all parents, teachers, students, tutors, and
pianists for helping to make 2006 Balmoral Summer School a great
success and a fun and happy place to be!!
