13th Nov 06 - Pipeworkz Dancers return from Germany
"We are in Singapore on the way home from our tour in Germany.
It all went very well with everyone having a fabulous time and our
performance was very well received.
We performed in Berlin, Hamburg and Cologne and some of the highlights
would be performing in front of 12000 people in Cologne, meeting
up with the Highlanders Pipeband - Regiment and having a heap of
craic and seeing the sights of Gernmany.
Sights included the Brandonberg Gate and Berlin Wall in Berlin
and the Dom (huge Cathedral) in Cologne. We all had a fabulous time
with lots of hard work put in, a bit of sightseeing and a heap of
fun.
Our 10 minute performance of the Maori, Pacific Island and Celtic
cultures was very well received and it was great to show the rest
of the world the story of New Zealand through, music, song and dance
and our great multicultural population. We were very well received
and hope that we can open up more opportunities for us and other
New Zealand group to perform in the future
Tara Harris is now off to live in the UK and has lots of new adventures
but for the rest of the team its back to work."
Jolie McLeod

31 Oct 06 - Final report from Dancers who participated on Korean
Tour
Our 2nd day at Everland was filled with excitement and fear as
all of us embarked on all the scary rides! We then partook in the
Everland Parade. Jadyn Withington, Michael Gudgen and George Jackson
were promoted to pop star status as they were mobbed by screaming
Korean girls, yelling out, “We love you!” Somehow, they got hold
of a Haeri’s, the Korean girl in our team, cell phone number and
Michael received 150 text messages from all his fans.
A quick spot of sightseeing was organised for us on our last day
in Korea. We went to a traditional village that is still in existence
showing how the Koreans used to live years ago. Of course, shopping
was also made time for!
The final performance was amazing, the crowd went crazy, hundreds
of screaming girls (the boys fan club), filled the audience, some
having travelled over 4 hours to see us. Upon completion of our
item, security guards had to stop the Korean girls from leaving
the auditorium. Michael then had to be escorted to the bus by 6
security officers at the end of the show, to stop his fans mobbing
him. It was the funniest sight you can imagine! The boys loved it
and I am sure that all their friends back home will not believe
their popularity in Korea!
We arrived back late to our resort and organised a team thank you
and goodbye party! It was a very late night (or early morning!)
for most, as some of the girls had to leave at 5am in the morning,
so of course we had to say goodbye to them!
We are all now home safe and sound! A wonderful time was had by
all and we all have made some great new friends from around the
world! I think the only thing I won’t miss is Kimchi (traditional
Korean cabbage dish) and rice, which was served up for every meal!
Photos coming soon...

13th Oct 06 - Latest update on NZ Highland Dancers in Korea
Well, our performances are now under way! The opening ceremony
was 2 nights ago, where we were one of the two acts specially selected
to perform our 15 minute item, which consists of dancing to highland
style music to NZ traditional music using pois and then dancing
to Korean hip hop music. The atmosphere was unbelievable. The crowd
went crazy, yelling and screaming with excitement during our dance!
Yesterday we went to Everland, (Korean equivalent of Disneyland!)
where we partook in a parade and then performed our act. With last
mintue changes, as the Canadians managed to arrive in time, we performed
our first show. It was great to finally get out there and perform
the dance that we had been working so hard on over the last few
days!
Today we went to the Korean War Memorial Museum, where we performed
in front of officials. We performed our 15 minute dance, only to
be told later that that was the rehearsal and that we had to perform
it again, as the officials had not been in attendance! The joys
of trying to understand a different language! We then went to a
temple and managed to fit in a quick spot of shopping! With another
show over, everyone is extermely tired due to the packed schedule,
but everyone is very excited as it is another trip to Everland tomorrow
to go on all the rides!
9th Oct 06 - Update fromNZ Dancers in Korea
"We have all arrived safely in Wonju. We are staying in a
Ski Resort, where we overlook a skifield! (except there is no snow!)
For the past 2 days, we have been rehearsing our dance seeing it
is the first time we have all been together.
Yesterday we went to the purpose built Auditorium where we will
be performing. The only slight drama is that 7 Canadian dancers
in the team are stuck in Tokyo, due to the Typhoon and we don't
know when they will be arriving! Hopefully they get here in time
before the performances begin!"

14 Sept 06 - Lorna Coombes
It
is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Academy member
Lorna Coombes on September the 5th aged 22 years.
Lorna was diagnosed with leukemia in September last
year just prior to the New Zealand Academy Conference in Wellington,
and fought a long hard battle with dignity and courage.
Her Scottish heritage played a big part in her life
and she had a great passion for Highland Dancing which was reflected
in her life.
The love and respect for Lorna, from within the dancing
community, was evident by the large number of people who came from
all over New Zealand to say farewell to Lorna and to support her
family. Such was the respect and admiration held for Lorna, a Guard
of Honour comprising 40 of our dancers from all age groups provided
a fitting tribute.
Our sincere sympathy goes to Morag, Dougie and Gordon.

- Airforce Proms, Guest Highland Dancers
Over 120 musicians from the Royal
New Zealand Air Force Bands combined on Sunday 3rd Sept in Wellington's
Michael Fowler Centre, to present, to a full house, the highly popular,
“AIR FORCE PROMS.” In attendance was the Governor General, Chief
of Air Force and Chief od Defence.
The concert has become an annual feature of the Wellington Entertainment
scene and this year featured a whole range of music from the swing
of Glenn Miller to a spectacular grand finale involving all 120
plus musicians. The concert also remembered those who have served
their country with the performance of a short commemorative ceremony.
A
highlight this year was 'A Scottish Tribute' - a lively Highland
Display led by Piper - SGT Murray Mansfield, accompanied by the
Central Bands of the RNZAF and featuring four special guest Highland
Dancers - Jean Glover, Shelley Reid, Lisa Dumelow and Kylie Allison-Miller.
Starting with Amazing Grace the tempo changed into lively Jig rhythms
as the dancers lept onto the stage to perform a polished routine.
Another highlight for audience and dancers alike was the Glenn
Miller medley, which was fantastically led by Trumpet player LAC
Barrett Hocking - of course also known as the grandson of the late
Orma Smith, a prominent member of the Academy.

6th Feb 06 - Our Patron Jeanie Paton's 90th Birthday Celebrations
For
someone who always likes to know what is happening this was the
best kept secret from Jeanie Paton in 90 years. What a wonderful
day!
With
the weather fine and just a gentle breeze we all met at her daughter
Allison's studio and awaited the arrival of the quest of honour.
With a guard of honour consisting mostly of former pupils Jeanie
Paton was piped into the studio by Bruce Cawood. A lovely luncheon
was served and Bruce spoke of her life and her dedication to the
Academy. Jeanie Paton was presented with a beautiful leather bound
book of memories and what a treasure trove of family and dancing
memoriabilia it was
She
cut her cake and then Jeanie and Katie Hobbs performed "Isle of
Iona" which Jeanie Paton had chorographed specially for them to
perform a few years ago at one of Allison's recitals. Next Sharon
Hostick danced "Gaels Down Under". Four older members of the Academy
(Cushla Piesse, Colleen Cole, Elizabeth Smith and Jackie Jones)
bravely managed a few steps of the Irish Reel accompanied by Bruce
on his pipes.
Jeanie Paton's daughters, Gillian and Allison made this day a very
memorable one for her and all who attended. The Academy is indeed
most fortunate to have as its Patron such a steadfast wonderful
lady.
6th Feb 06 - Sara Danced with the Stars!
So You Think You Can Dance? After seeing the ads on TV and the
encouragement on this website, I decided to apply for the exciting
new dance programme "So You Think You Can Dance?" To be honest,
I didn't even think I would get past the initial written application
stage… however I got accepted to go to Wellington with 400 other
dancers for an audition. It was fabulous!
After doing a choreographed item, the producers narrowed us down
to about 120 for the second round of auditioning in front of the
3 judges. From there, 30 of us were selected to do hiphop and waltz
classes, performing each for the judges (and the cameras!). Although
both were somewhat out of my comfort zone, I had a great time and
loved doing something different. Of the 30, 9 dancers - all either
contemporary, hiphop or ballroom dancers - made it through to the
next stage which was to be a week long workshop with the best choreographers
from throughout Australasia. The judges thought a Highland dancer
was probably not ideal to go further in the programme, which emphasizes
the need for more of you to get out there and give Highland some
publicity!
As well as being a fantastic dance experience, it was an eye-opener
into the TV industry. So much of what is seen on "reality television"
is obviously completely not real! So… if you see me on TV shedding
a few tears, bear in mind we had been at the theatre for 13 hours,
the cameramen thought getting 'eliminated' meant the end of my dancing
career (yeah right!) and I always cry at the drop of a hat, no matter
what the emotion! At any rate, I now have a special interest in
watching the programme and hope you all enjoy it too. And next time,
perhaps there will be more than one lone Highland dancer up there
footing it with the best dancers in the country!

25th Jan 06 -Christmas Ahoy - 25th Anniversary Concert
The
Jacqueline Jones School of Dance annual Christmas concert was held
on Sunday 4th December 2005 at Christchurch Girls High School. This
year was a particularly special occasion as the concert marked 25
years of teaching for Jackie.
70 dancers ranging in age from 4 to 20 years performed Highland
and Jazz items. The concert was based on a nautical theme. Items
were performed on the deck of a ship. Highlights included a mass
fling, McCan Can, £40 float (from the movie Titanic) and a finale
that involved sailors, pirates, stolen treasure and sword fights.
Presentations of examination certificates were made; Eleanor Glover
received the trophy for most improved Jazz student and Alyssa Brook
for most improved Highland student.
