FOR TEACHERS & PUPILS PREPARING FOR MAY EXAMINATIONS As teachers prepare for the forthcoming examinations it is recommended that time be taken to check the following points to enhance pupils presentation, dress and grooming. A good suggestion made is for teachers to draw up a checklist for parents which highlights times and fees for music practices and examination, expected dress standard and conduct within the vicinity of the examination venue. An example of Dress Standard expected: KILT: check it is fastened securely and fits the dancer at the waist and hips. Check it is of the correct length and flattering to the stature of the dancer. WAISTCOAT: a well tailored and fitted waistcoat enhances the line and strong appearance of the upper body, whether the arms are raised, at akimbo or circling. Big armholes, no darting or untidy fastening spoils the strong appearance of the upper body. BLOUSE: aim to show a flattering neckline that displays an open broad appearance across the chest and shoulders. Rows of lace that sit flat across the chest assist with this. Check sleeves are not too puffy and lace frill not too long. HOSE: these should show the front centre diamond and all diamonds below running in a straight line down the front of the leg. The diamonds should match each other across both legs. Flashes to be kept neat and cut the outside point of the front centre diamond. PUMPS: to be clean, polished and well fitted with laces neatly tucked away. HAIR: where possible hair should be tied up well off the shoulders in a bun or similar style. This will give a lovely dignified appearance. Finally a pleasant happy face and good manners goes a long way and certainly lifts the spirits of the examiner.
